Keith Chowan

The extent of Keith Chowan's commitment to technology is demonstrated by the fact that he has brought in his personal laptop to use at the office to insure access to the latest desktop tools to help him manage his freight terminal. Personal computing has long been a major hobby for Keith and he has introduced WISL to many desktop facilities that he has discovered at the computer store or on the internet. However Keith's contributions have been even more significant in providing the initial system requirement specifications and being an ongoing testing resource for the development of WISL Dispatch.

The initial focus of WISL Dispatch was on the capabilities for a dispatcher to plan and direct pick-ups and deliveries of freight. Modules have been added that extend the facilities of the system to support many of the major activities involved in managing a freight terminal. The drivers also participate by recording trip activity including the disposition of each trailer through a data entry facility located at the terminal. Consequently Keith has a record of the activity of all of his terminal's road equipment and may determine the current location of any piece of equipment instantly.

The most recent feature that has been implemented in WISL Dispatch at Keith's terminal is the integration with the driver paging system. In the past, notification of the driver was done through a separate paging data entry device. The ability to generate page records in WISL Dispatch and initiate the communication to the paging system has eliminated redundancy and improved the accuracy and completeness of communication with drivers.

WISL developed a program to interact with the communication protocol utilized by the paging company and added the facility to generate pager transactions in the required format but it was Keith Chowan, as it was with so many other innovations with WISL Dispatch, who provided the driving force.
